Nutritional properties of sunflower seed meal and its application to ruminants

Protein

The protein content of sunflower meal varies widely depending on the method of extraction. For unhulled sunflower meal, the protein content is usually between 29% and 33%, while for partially and completely hulled sunflower meal, it is usually between 35% and 39%. The protein digestibility of sunflower meal is approximately 82%, which is comparable to that of soya meal. The ammonia content of the rumen increases rapidly within 4h of feeding sunflower meal in dairy cows (or sheep), which facilitates microbial protein synthesis and digestion of organic matter. The use of cellulase in the diet to break down sunflower meal fibre releases more energy and protein.

Sunflower meal contains more sulphur-containing amino acids, particularly methionine, than other oil meal feeds, but its lysine content is much lower than that of soya bean meal (3.5% CP vs 6.1% CP). The amino acid utilisation efficiency of sunflower meal was comparable to that of soya bean meal and higher than that of miscellaneous meals such as cottonseed and rape meal. Samples from five major sunflower meal producing areas in China were measured to contain 1.22% to 1.67% lysine, 0.61% to 0.89% methionine, 1.08% to 1.45% threonine and 0.32% to 0.44% tryptophan. Other studies measured various amino acids in the range of 0.57% to 0.91% for methionine, 0.53% to 0.66% for cysteine, 0.87% to 1.43% for lysine, 1.15% to 1.52% for threonine, 1.94% to 2.87% for arginine, 1.25% to 2.04% for isoleucine, 2.02% to 2.65%, valine 1.58% to 2.17%.

Vitamins

Sunflower seed meal is rich in B vitamins, the content of which is higher than that of soya bean meal. The niacin content is the highest among all cake meal feeds (>200mg/kg), about 5.8 times that of soya bean meal, while the thiamine content (>10mg/kg) and choline content (about 2800mg/kg) are also very high.

Minerals

Sunflower seed meal has a higher calcium content than other cake meal feeds, and is also rich in potassium, zinc, iron and copper. The contents of calcium, sodium, potassium, zinc, copper and iron in sunflower seed meal were determined to be 716mg/100g, 156mg/100g, 733mg/100g, 15.8mg/100g, 7.1mg/100g and 51mg/100g respectively.

In the field of ruminant nutrition, sunflower meal is widely appreciated as an economical protein and fibre feed. Many trials have proven that even non-hulled sunflower meal can be used as a protein supplement in ruminant diets. In a balance of protein and crude fibre, sunflower meal can partially replace soya, cottonseed or peanut meal.

It is made from sunflower seeds after pressing or directly extracting the oil by leaching, and is grey or grey-black in colour, with the characteristic aroma of sunflower seeds and rich in nutrients. In terms of production, it is the fourth largest oil meal after soya meal, double low rapeseed meal and cottonseed meal, and is an important protein feed material.
