Chinese specialty oil—Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge

1A brief introduction to Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge

Also known as Mandarin fruit, Mandarin wood or northern papaya, Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge is a deciduous shrub or small tree in the Sapotaceae family, and can grow to over 5 meters tall with opposite, predominantly lance-shaped or subovate leaves. It blooms in spring and the fruit ripens in early autumn. The fruit looks like a walnut and splits open automatically when ripe, revealing the black seeds inside.

The fruit tree is highly adaptable, drought-resistant, barren, and can grow in patches in the wasteland, and is distributed in the vast northern areas of China, as far south as Henan. It has a long life span and can live for hundreds of years in its natural state, so it also has the reputation of "longevity fruit" and "the first fruit of China".

2Oil content and production method of Xanthoceras sorbifolia Bunge

Its seeds have a very high oil content, higher than any of the common oil crops in China, which can reach more than 72%, with an average oil content of more than 65%, which is more than one times that of rape. In ancient times initially, it was used to squeeze oil for Buddhist lamps, which could remain unextinguished for a long time. Later it was found that can also be used as edible oil and has high nutritional value, with 94% unsaturated fatty acid content, higher than even that of olive oil. It also contains 18 kinds of amino acids, including the seven essential amino acids for our body, with a content of 8.5%, accounting for about 40% of the total. Therefore, it can be said that it is a very high quality developable oil.

Meanwhile, the oil can be obtained in the following three ways.

1. Boiling and pressing method

First, the seeds will be selected clean, and then fried, fried until about 1/3 of the seeds slightly cracked is appropriate. Then use a mill or machinery to crush the seeds. If crushed by machinery, repeatedly crushed twice. After crushing and boiling with water, and constantly skim out the liquid oil. Then the skimmed oil-water mixture and then placed in a pot with a low fire slow boil. After the water evaporates, you will get the oil. With this method of oil extraction, the oil yield of the seeds of Corolla fruit is only 12 - -15%.

2. Cake pressing method

Also need to first fry the seeds, crushed. Then the crushed fruit powder will be added to about 10% of the water in a container steamed for 30 minutes. The steamed powder will be mixed into the powder weight of about 1/5 of the clean wet straw while hot to make sisal cake. Then use the vertical hydraulic oil press to extract oil. After one pressing, the cake can be broken up for a second oil extraction. With this method, the oil yield of the seeds can reach about 23%.

3. Raw pressing method

Will remove impurities of the seeds with a crusher crushed into a half grain. Use small screw type oil press to squeeze oil, oil residue can be used as filler material repeatedly pressed. Then leave the oil overnight, pour out the clear oil, and then mix the slag into the crushed seeds for pressing. With this method of oil extraction, the oil yield of the seeds of the fruit can reach about 25%.
