Introduction to the three main ports in Tanzania
1、Port of Dar es Salaam
Port nature: Gulf port with entrepot area, basic port.
Dar es Salaam port is located in Dar es Salaam Bay on the eastern coast of Tanzania, bordering the western side of the Indian Ocean, about 35 miles northeast of Zanzibar Island, is the largest seaport in Tanzania, is also one of the famous ports in East Africa.
The port of Dar es Salaam is a major natural deep water port with open waters of approximately 950,000 square metres and a current capacity of 4.1 million tonnes of dry cargo and 6 million tonnes of bulk liquid cargo. The port has a coastline of 2016 metres and 11 deep-water quay berths with a maximum depth of 10 metres.
The port of Dar es Salaam handles approximately 95% of Tanzania's international trade. The port serves landlocked African countries such as Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda. The port's prime location facilitates the movement of goods through the countries of East and Central Africa, as well as the Middle and Far East, Europe, Australia and the United States.
2. Tanga Port
Tanga is the oldest port in East Africa and is a barge port with two shallow berths.
Tanga port is located on the northern coast of Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border. It is 354 kilometres from the port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest port, which is located to the south. The port currently has a capacity of 750,000 tonnes per annum.
The port's unique location means that it serves mainly the agricultural areas of northern Tanzania and is connected to the interior by road and rail networks. An integral part.
3. Mtwara Port
The port of Mtwara is a deep water port built between 1948 and 1954 on the southern coast of Tanzania. The deep water port was built in conjunction with the Mtwara-Nachinqua railway line, which was abandoned and the port continues to operate today but is still underutilised.
Analysis by the China-Africa Trade Research Centre (CATRC) shows that as Tanzania's three main ports, the ports of Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara together support Tanzania's international trade, with the largest port, Dar es Salaam, handling around 95% of Tanzania's international trade.
